Brakes
Your brakes are one of the few components on your car where a delay in getting something looked at can genuinely put you at risk. If something feels, sounds or looks different when you brake, it’s worth having it checked rather than waiting for your next service.
Brake pads wear faster than discs and are usually the first thing to need attention, but discs also wear over time and can become warped, scored or thinner than the safe minimum. Replacing pads on worn or damaged discs isn’t a lasting fix, so we check both and recommend only what your car actually needs, rather than replacing components unnecessarily.
Brake fluid also degrades over time, absorbing moisture that can affect braking performance, so this gets checked as part of a proper brake inspection too.
We inspect pad and disc thickness against the manufacturer’s minimum specification, check for uneven wear or damage, and assess the condition of the brake fluid. If anything’s borderline rather than clearly needing replacement, we’ll tell you honestly, including roughly how much life is likely left, rather than pushing unnecessary work.
Brakes aren’t somewhere to cut corners, and we don’t. We use original equipment parts, and every brake job comes with 12 months labour cover as standard. As a Bosch Car Service centre, the way we inspect and replace brake components is measured against a recognised standard, giving you genuine confidence rather than just a lower quote.
Squealing often points to worn pads, while grinding, scraping or vibration through the pedal can indicate the discs need attention too. A proper inspection is the only way to know for certain which components need replacing.
This varies with driving style and conditions, but many pads last between 20,000 and 40,000 miles. Stop-start city driving tends to wear pads faster than motorway driving.
You should get this checked as soon as possible rather than continuing to drive as normal, since a brake warning light can indicate anything from low fluid to a more significant fault affecting your ability to stop safely.
In some cases yes, if the discs are still within safe thickness and in good condition. We’ll only recommend replacing discs when they actually need it, not as a matter of course.
The cost depends on your make and model and whether pads, discs, or both need replacing. Get in touch with your registration details, and we’ll confirm pricing before you book in.
Penston Garage is a Bosch Car Service centre, and our technicians are members of the IMI, so the work on your car is measured against a recognised industry standard, not just our own. It’s an added layer of reassurance on top of the 12 months labour cover and manufacturer-backed parts warranty that come with every job.
