ECU Remapping
ECU mapping adjusts the software that controls your engine, fine-tuning things like fuel delivery, turbo boost and ignition timing to change how your car performs. Done properly, it can bring out power and torque your engine already has the mechanical capacity for, or improve economy on a car that’s currently running a conservative factory setting.
Your engine control unit runs on a set of parameters worked out by the manufacturer, and those settings are often deliberately cautious to suit a wide range of driving conditions, fuel qualities and markets. Remapping replaces those parameters with a set tailored to your specific car and what you want from it.
Before any map goes near your car, we check the engine over properly. A car with existing faults, worn components or a poorly maintained service history isn’t a good candidate for remapping, and we’ll tell you honestly if that’s the case rather than pressing ahead anyway.
Once we’re satisfied the engine is in good order, we use our diagnostic equipment to establish a baseline and identify your exact ECU variant, since getting this wrong can cause real problems. The map itself is then loaded and tested, with adjustments made until the car is running the way it should.
Remapping isn’t something to hand over to just anyone. Get it wrong, and you risk anything from a rough-running engine to genuine mechanical damage. As a Bosch Car Service centre with IMI-qualified technicians, we bring the same level of diagnostic rigour to remapping as we do to any other job, checking your car properly beforehand and verifying the results afterwards rather than treating it as a quick software flash.
We’re also upfront about what a remap can and can’t do for your particular car, so you know what to expect before you commit to anything.
When it’s done on a well-maintained engine with a map suited to that specific vehicle, remapping is generally safe. The risk comes from generic maps applied without proper checks first, which is why we assess your car before recommending anything.
Remapping can affect a manufacturer warranty, particularly on newer cars still within their warranty period. We’ll talk you through this honestly based on your specific car and warranty status before you go ahead.
This depends heavily on your engine, particularly whether it’s turbocharged, and what the map is built to prioritise. We can give you a realistic idea for your specific car once we’ve had a look at it.
Cost depends on your make and model and the type of map you’re after. Get in touch with your registration details and we’ll give you an accurate quote.
A remap itself isn’t something an MOT tester checks for directly, but your insurer should be informed of any performance modifications, as this can affect your policy. We’d always recommend checking with them before proceeding.
Penston Garage is a Bosch Car Service centre, and our technicians are members of the IMI, so the work on your car is measured against a recognised industry standard, not just our own. It’s an added layer of reassurance on top of the 12 months labour cover and manufacturer-backed parts warranty that come with every job.
