Diagnostics
If a warning light has come on, your car is running roughly, or something just doesn’t feel right, diagnostics is how we find out what’s actually going on. Rather than guessing at parts and replacing them one by one, we use proper diagnostic equipment to identify the fault directly.
We connect your car to our KTS diagnostic equipment, which reads fault codes and live data directly from your car’s onboard systems. This tells us far more than a generic code reader would, giving us a genuine picture of what’s happening rather than just a list of possible causes.
From there, we interpret what the equipment is telling us against the symptoms you’ve described and what we find on a physical inspection. Fault codes point us in the right direction, but they don’t always tell the whole story on their own, which is where experience comes in.
Once we’ve identified the actual cause, we’ll explain what we’ve found in plain terms and talk you through what needs to happen next, along with the cost, before any repair work begins.
Not every garage has invested in diagnostic equipment to this standard, and fewer still have technicians trained to interpret what it’s actually telling them. Our KTS equipment, combined with our team’s IMI qualifications and Bosch Car Service backing, means we’re identifying the real fault rather than working through a list of guesses at your expense.
That matters most when a warning light could mean something minor or something serious. Getting it diagnosed properly the first time saves you money on unnecessary parts and gets your car sorted faster.
It can mean a wide range of things, from a loose fuel cap to a more significant engine fault. The light itself doesn’t tell you which, which is exactly why a proper diagnostic check matters rather than guessing.
Some warning lights indicate a fault you can drive with cautiously in the short term, while others mean you should stop as soon as it’s safe to do so. If you’re unsure, it’s worth getting it checked promptly rather than waiting to see what happens.
Most diagnostic checks can be carried out within an hour, though this can vary depending on the fault and whether further investigation is needed once we’ve seen the initial results.
Get in touch with details of the symptoms and your registration, and we’ll confirm the cost of a diagnostic check for your car before you book in.
We’ll always be clear about how this works when you book in, so you know exactly what you’re paying for at each stage.
Penston Garage is a Bosch Car Service centre, and our technicians are members of the IMI, so the work on your car is measured against a recognised industry standard, not just our own. It’s an added layer of reassurance on top of the 12 months labour cover and manufacturer-backed parts warranty that come with every job.
